The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement on January 11. 2019:

The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India deplores the action of the Assam police and the state government for booking a well recognised and respected academician Hiren Gohain, a known activist Akhil Gogoi and journalist Manjit Mohanta on charges of sedition for their critical remarks on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

There are protests against the bill in Assam and in several parts of North-East region. People in Assam believe that the bill violates the spirit and tenets of 1985 Assam Accord.

There was uproar in the Parliament on this issue. Instead of addressing the concerns of the people, the government of Assam thinks that it can suppress the voice of criticism and questioning.

The CPI demands that the government should withdraw the cases and desist from continuing such repressive measures.
