Press Release
On Donald Trump’s Threats of Tariffs
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued today (August 1, 2025) the following statement:
The Communist Party of India strongly condemns the recent irresponsible and hostile statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump, including his threat to impose a 25% tariff or punitive measures on any country, including India that continues business with Russia.
Such statements are not just offensive; they are a part of a broader imperialist pressure campaign that aims to dictate what should be the economic and foreign policy choices of other nations. India, as a sovereign country, has the full right to pursue economic and strategic relations that serve its national interests—including cooperation with Russia and other partners in the Global South. These ties have historically contributed to India’s development, energy security, defence capabilities, and geopolitical balance.
India should maintain its business relations with the United States, but such engagement must be based on mutual benefit and equality, not dictated by unilateral demands or coercive pressures from US.
What is more concerning is the Indian government’s casual and submissive response to Trump’s unacceptable threats and insults. This exposes the BJP-led government’s spinelessness and its dependence on Western powers, especially the United States, even at the cost of national interests.
The CPI demands that the Government of India should firmly reject Trump’s threats. It must assert India’s sovereign right to conduct trade and cooperation with countries like Russia, free from U.S. interference or intimidation, and reaffirm a foreign policy based on equal cooperation—not as a junior partner to any imperialist power.
