No to the use of Portuguese territory to escalate the aggression against Iran!

Reports of the presence of US military aircraft in Terceira, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, demand an immediate and urgent clarification by the PSD/CDS government. The PCP condemns any potential use of the Lajes Base by the US to escalate aggression against Iran and warns against Portugal’s involvement in this aggression, given the PSD/CDS government’s policy of alignment and subservience to imperialism.

Recalling that the Lajes Base has functioned as a veritable “aircraft carrier” in the mid-Atlantic for US acts of war — notably during the Gulf War (1990), the invasion of Afghanistan (2001), and the invasion of Iraq (2003) — the PCP reaffirms its opposition to the existence of foreign military bases in Portugal and to the use of Portuguese territory for acts of interference and aggression against other peoples.

The PCP considers it extremely serious that the PSD/CDS government, instead of upholding the Portuguese Constitution by pursuing a policy of peace and the political resolution of conflicts, aligns itself with the forces of militarism and war.

In contrast to those who encourage and feed the militarist escalation, the PCP emphasises the importance of continuing and expanding the struggle for national sovereignty and independence, as well as for Peace, and also in solidarity with all peoples who are the victims of imperialist aggression.

Não à utilização de território português para a escalada de agressão contra o Irão

As notícias sobre a presença de aviões das forças armadas norte-americanas na Terceira, na Região Autónoma dos Açores, exige um pronto e urgente esclarecimento por parte do Governo PSD/CDS. O PCP condena a eventual utilização da Base das Lajes pelos EUA para a escalada de agressão ao Irão e alerta contra o envolvimento de Portugal nesta agressão face à política do Governo PSD/CDS de alinhamento e submissão ao imperialismo.

Lembrando que a Base das Lajes tem funcionado como um autêntico “porta-aviões” a meio do Atlântico para as acções belicistas dos EUA – nomeadamente na Guerra do Golfo (1990), na invasão do Afeganistão (2001) ou na invasão do Iraque (2003) –, o PCP reafirma a sua oposição à existência de bases militares estrangeiras em Portugal e à utilização de território português para acções de ingerência e agressão contra outros povos.

O PCP considera da maior gravidade que o Governo do PSD/CDS em lugar de, de acordo com a Constituição da República Portuguesa, pugnar por uma política de paz e de solução política dos conflitos, se alinhe com as forças do militarismo e da guerra.

Em contraponto aos que animam e apostam na escalada militarista, o PCP sublinha a importância de se prosseguir e ampliar a luta em prol da soberania e independência nacionais e pela Paz, assim como a solidariedade com os povos vítimas das agressões do imperialismo.
