The Portuguese Communist Party Condemns the US Aggression Against Iran

The PCP vehemently condemns the US aggression against Iran, which follows its support for the attacks initiated by Israel against this Middle Eastern country on June 13, 2025, in a clear violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter and of international law.

This serious aggression, which targeted nuclear facilities — an illegal act under international norms— occurred at a time when indirect negotiations were underway between Iran and the US, regarding the Agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme, which the Iranian authorities reaffirmed was only for peaceful purposes. That Agreement was signed in 2015 but the USA unilaterally and unjustifiably abandoned it in 2018, in an attempt to impose its own domineering conditions on Iran.

It should be noted that Israel is the only country in the Middle East possessing nuclear weapons, and yet it refuses to ratify the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) or accept inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) — unlike what has happened with Iran.

Recalling decades of violations of international law, of interference, destabilisation and war by the US, Israel, NATO and EU powers in the region — in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, and now Iran—the PCP holds US imperialism and its allies responsible for the severe deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, namely for Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people and for the consequences of this latest aggression.

The PCP underscores that the aggression against Iran is part of the broader agenda of the USA and other imperialist powers within the G7, to impose their hegemonic domination worldwide through force and violence.

The PCP reiterates its demand for an immediate and urgent clarification by the PSD/CDS government regarding the presence of US military aircraft in Terceira, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, and their role in the recent attack. The PCP condemns any potential use of the Lajes Base by the US to escalate aggression against Iran, thereby implicating Portugal in this act of aggression. The PCP urges the Portuguese government to condemn the US and Israeli aggression against Iran — backed by NATO and EU powers — as well as the broader escalation of war in the Middle East, including the genocide of the Palestinian people, demanding its immediate end. The Portuguese government’s failure to distance itself from, and condemn, these actions not only contradicts the principles of the Portuguese Constitution but also constitutes complicity in this criminal warmongering policy, which flagrantly violates international law.
Denouncing those who encourage and fuel confrontation and war, pushing humanity ever closer to catastrophe, the PCP calls on all democrats, patriots, and defenders of peace to raise their voices in protest and outrage, to ensure that no one remains indifferent to the dangers posed by these aggressions, and to continue and expand the struggle for peace and solidarity with the Palestinian people and other victims of imperialist aggression in the Middle East.

PCP condena agressão dos EUA ao Irão

O PCP condena veementemente a agressão dos EUA ao Irão, na sequência do apoio que estes asseguraram aos ataques iniciados por Israel contra este país do Médio Oriente no passado dia 13 de Junho, em clara violação dos princípios da Carta das Nações Unidas e do direito internacional.

Esta grave agressão, em que foram visadas instalações nucleares, o que constitui uma ilegalidade à luz das normas internacionais, verifica-se no momento em que estavam em curso negociações indirectas entre o Irão e os EUA relativamente ao acordo sobre o programa nuclear iraniano, que as autoridades iranianas reafirmam prosseguir fins pacíficos. Acordo assinado em 2015 e que os EUA inaceitavelmente e unilateralmente abandonaram em 2018, para tentar impor ao Irão as suas condições de domínio.

Saliente-se que Israel é único país detentor de armas nucleares no Médio Oriente e que se recusa a ratificar o Tratado de Não Proliferação de Armas Nucleares e a aceitar as inspecções da Agência Internacional de Energia Atómica, ao contrário do que se verifica com o Irão.

Recordando as décadas de violações do direito internacional, de ingerência, de desestabilização e de guerra por parte dos EUA, de Israel, da NATO e de potências da UE na região – Palestina, Líbano, Iraque, Afeganistão, Líbia, Síria, Iémen, Sudão e agora o Irão –, o PCP responsabiliza o imperialismo norte-americano e os seus aliados pelo sério agravamento da situação no Médio Oriente, desde logo pelo genocídio do povo palestiniano por parte de Israel e pelas consequências desta nova agressão.

O PCP salienta que a agressão ao Irão se insere no propósito mais vasto dos EUA e das outras potências imperialistas reunidas no G7 de tentarem, pela via da força e da violência, impor o seu domínio hegemónico no plano mundial.

O PCP reafirma a exigência de um pronto e urgente esclarecimento por parte do Governo PSD/CDS sobre a presença de aviões das forças armadas norte-americanas na Terceira, na Região Autónoma dos Açores, e o papel que desempenharam no ataque agora efectivado, e condena a eventual utilização da Base das Lajes pelos EUA para a escalada de agressão ao Irão com o consequente envolvimento de Portugal nessa agressão. O PCP insta o Governo português a condenar a agressão ao Irão pelos EUA e Israel, com a conivência das potências da NATO e da União Europeia, assim como toda escalada de guerra que estes levam a cabo no Médio Oriente, em que se insere o genocídio do povo palestiniano, exigindo o seu fim imediato. O não distanciamento e condenação por parte do Governo português, além de contrariar os princípios da Constituição da República Portuguesa, representa um acto de conivência com esta criminosa política belicista que constitui uma clara afronta ao direito internacional.

Denunciando os que animam e apostam na escalada de confrontação e guerra que empurra cada vez mais a Humanidade para a catástrofe, o PCP apela a todos os democratas e patriotas, aos defensores da paz, para que não calem o seu protesto e indignação, para que ninguém fique indiferente perante os perigos que estas agressões encerram, e prossigam e ampliem a luta pela Paz e a solidariedade com o povo palestiniano e os outros povos vítimas da agressão do imperialismo no Médio Oriente.
