AKEL conscious of its responsibility towards the people of Cyprus calls on the opposition parties to demonstrate the necessary seriousness and responsibility and to support even at this late stage the President of the Republic who is waging the battle for our country in New York. We particularly regret the policy of spreading scenarios and alarmism which has grown by various politicians' public statements, even before the beginning of the first meeting of between the representatives of both communities with the UN Secretary-General. We are totally opposed to it. This is contrary to the interests of our people and our country's cause in general.
As AKEL, we stress that we support the President of the Republic and we are on his side aiming to dampen the Turkish intransigence and move decisively towards the solution and comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem within the framework set out by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
Any discussion and expression of views of parties regarding the meeting in Green Tree is welcome and imperative. However, what is crucial currently is the unity of forces and the maximum possible support to the handling and positions of the Greek Cypriot side.
