Gilmore dancing to Zionist tune on IranThe Workers Party today accused the Tanaiste and Goverment of dancing to a US/Israeli tune in the present Iran controversy.
The Workers’ Party stated: “Of course Iran shouldn't be trying to develop nuclear weapons. However there is very little hard evidence that this is actually happening. Once again is Ireland and the EU taking the word of the people who brought us the fictitious “weapons of mass destruction”? Can we soon expect to see Colin Powell wheeled out to point earnestly at more meaningless splodges on a map?
It is sheer hypocrisy of the so-called West to demand Iran stop any programme of nuclear weapons production when their own arsenals are bristling with powerful nukes. In the midst of the present brutal recession the UK, for example, is proposing to spend up to £100bn on new nuclear submarines.
If the West is concerned about nuclear proliferation in the Middle East where is the embargo against Israel which illegally developed nukes in the 1980s? The hypocrisy is as breathtaking as it is dangerous.
Why should Ireland, and indeed the EU, blindly follow US foreign policy? The US is not interested in human rights. It's own record is far from enviable - be it Vietnam; its consistent military interference in the internal affairs of its Central and South American neighbours; its torture centres in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib; or its illegal detention of the Cuban 5. The US is only interested in oil and in keeping control of the Middle East through its permanent naval presence in the Gulf and its support for Israel.
The US State Department, with Hillary Clinton as main cheerleader, are hell bent on attacking Iran and further tightening US control over the world’s dwindling oil supplies. Apart from the needless human misery and material destrution which such a war will cause it will also be the catalyst for a massive spike in oil prices. This will drive the EU economy in general, and the Irish economy in particular, into a destructive tailspin and double dip recession from which it will take decades to recover.
Therefore from both a humanitarian and economic standpoint of view we demand that the Tanaiste and the Irish government show a bit of backbone. Maybe it is time Mr Gilmore wore the “Green Jersey” rather than the Stars and Stripes.
