AKEL stands in solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people at a historic moment when the peace-loving and progressive forces all over the world are called upon to express their international solidarity, following the recent escalation of the state of war in Gaza and the subsequent ceasefire that has been concluded with the involvement of third countries.
We are all witnesses over the recent days of the atrocities committed by the Israeli army on targets in Gaza that have resulted in 136 dead and 941 injured, the majority of whom are women, children and ordinary civilians.
The international community's silence over the situation concerning what really is going on has also been tragic.
At the same time we state clearly that AKEL does not support any terrorist attacks by fundamentalist organisations against Israel and its citizens. However, it is once again absolutely clear that the brutality and violence exerted by Israel was unacceptable and cannot be justified.
We call for the respect of the ceasefire and the immediate start of a dialogue, the termination of the colonisation and the acceptance of a two state solution on the borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state.
In view of the developments, the Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas is due to submit a proposal for the upgrading of the state observer status of Palestine at the United Nations in the UN General Assembly on the 29th November. AKEL calls on the international community to support the just Palestinian demand.
Within the context of these developments, AKEL calls on the Cypriot people to once again express its active solidarity with the Palestinian people with its participation in the protest meeting being organised by the EDON Youth Organisation on Friday 23rd November 8.00 p.m. outside the Israeli Embassy in Nicosia.
It is the peoples more than anybody else who suffer from the consequences of war.
