The people who are determined to assert their rights will not be deterred by laws, amendments, or fences

The parliamentary majority of the ruling right-wing New Democracy party voted for an amendment prohibiting protests at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, which is located near the parliament building in Athens and is often used as a venue for demonstrations.

Recently, the square in front of the monument has become the focus of protests by relatives of the victims of Greece’s deadliest railway accident, which occurred in February 2023 when a freight train and a passenger train traveling in opposite directions collided on the same tracks. The collision killed 57 people, mainly students returning to university after the holidays.

Unfortunately, the collision of the two trains confirmed the protests of railway unionists and KKE MPs in the Greek parliament, who had warned about the lack of necessary safety systems, which the bourgeois state had sacrificed on the altar of big business profits, several days before the tragedy. The slogan “Their profits or our lives”, which has echoed through mass demonstrations since the crime in Tempe, now adorns the banners of trade unions and student associations.

Meanwhile, a makeshift memorial to the victims of the train tragedy has been set up in part of the square in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. The victims’ names have been written in red paint on the ground and are surrounded by candles and vases of flowers. Panos Routsis, whose 22-year-old son Deni was killed in the train crash, recently staged on a 23-day hunger strike near the makeshift memorial, demanding that his son’s remains be exhumed for toxicology and DNA tests to determine the exact cause of death. This request was supported by the KKE and most of the opposition parties in Greece. Finally, in early October, the judicial authorities granted permission for the exhumation.

Speaking in parliament, D. Koutsoumbas, GS of the CC of the KKE, said that the real problem for the government is not the alleged preservation of the character of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. “Your problem is the popular protest and mobilization, as evidenced recently on the occasion of Panos Routsis’ hunger strike and the support for his just demand”, he added. “The momentum of the people who are determined to assert their rights cannot be deterred by laws, amendments, or fences.”

Парламентское большинство правящей правой партии НД приняло поправку в закон, запрещающую проведение протестов у памятника Неизвестному Солдату, перед зданием парламента в Афинах, который часто становится местом проведения демонстраций. 

В последнее время площадь перед памятником стала центром протестов родственников жертв самого крупного железнодорожного преступления в Греции в феврале 2023 года, когда в результате лобового столкновения пассажирского и грузового поездов в Темпи погибли 57 человек, в основном студенты, которые возвращались в университет после праздничных выходных. 

Столкновение двух поездов, к сожалению, подтвердило справедливость протестов профсоюзных деятелей железнодорожной отрасли, а также депутатов КПГ с трибуны греческого парламента за несколько дней до трагедии в связи с отсутствием необходимых систем безопасности, которые были принесены в жертву буржуазным государством на алтарь прибыльности крупного капитала. Лозунг «Их прибыль или наша жизнь», который звучит на массовых демонстрациях после преступления в Темпи, теперь часто встречается  на транспарантах рабочих и студенческих  профсоюзов. 

Между тем на небольшом участке площади перед Могилой Неизвестного Солдата был установлен импровизированный мемориал жертвам железнодорожной катастрофы, с именами жертв, написанными красной краской на асфальте, в окружении свечей и вазонов с цветами. Панос Руци, который потерял своего 22-летнего сына Дениса в железнодорожной катастрофе, недавно провёл 23-дневную голодовку возле импровизированного мемориала, требуя эксгумировать тело сына для проведения токсикологической экспертизы и ДНК-теста, чтобы определить точную причину смерти. Его требование поддержала КПГ, а также большинство оппозиционных партий в Греции. В итоге судебные власти предоставили разрешение на эксгумацию в начале октября. 

Выступая с трибуны парламента, Генсек ЦК Компартии Греции Д. Куцумбас заявил, что истинная проблема правительства не в том, чтобы сохранить исторический характер памятника Неизвестному Солдату. «Вас беспокоит народный протест и протестные акции, прошедшие недавно в связи с голодовкой Паноса Руциса, в ходе которых была выражена поддержка его справедливого требования», — сказал он и добавил: «Порыв народа, решившего отстаивать свою правоту, не остановят ни законы,  ни поправки в закон, ни ограждения».

La mayoría parlamentaria del partido gobernante de derecha, Nueva Democracia, votó una enmienda que prohíbe las protestas en el Monumento al Soldado Desconocido, cerca del edificio del Parlamento en Atenas, que a menudo se convierte en lugar de manifestaciones.

La plaza frente al monumento se ha convertido recientemente en el centro de las protestas de los familiares de las víctimas del accidente ferroviario más mortífero de Grecia, ocurrido en febrero de 2023, cuando un tren mercantil y un tren de pasajeros, que circulaban en direcciones opuestas, colisionaron en las mismas vías. En la colisión murieron 57 personas, en su mayoría estudiantes que regresaban a la universidad después de las vacaciones.

La colisión de los dos trenes, por desgracia, confirmó la validez de las protestas expresadas por los sindicalistas ferroviarios y los diputados del KKE en el Parlamento griego varios días antes de la tragedia en relación con la falta de los sistemas de seguridad necesarios, que el Estado burgués había sacrificado en aras de la rentabilidad de las grandes empresas. El lema «Sus ganancias o nuestras vidas», que resuena en las manifestaciones masivas tras el crimen de Tempi, figura ahora en las pancartas de los sindicatos y las asociaciones estudiantiles.

Mientras tanto, se erigió un monumento improvisado en memoria de las víctimas de la tragedia ferroviaria en una pequeña parte de la plaza frente al Monumento al Soldado Desconocido. Los nombres de las víctimas estaban escritos con pintura roja en el suelo, rodeados de velas y jarrones con flores. Panos Routsis, que perdió a su hijo Deni, de 22 años, en el crimen ferroviario, hizo recientemente una huelga de hambre de 23 días cerca del monumento improvisado, exigiendo la exhumación del cuerpo de su hijo para realizar pruebas toxicológicas y de ADN, con el fin de determinar la causa exacta de la muerte. Su petición fue respaldada por el KKE, así como por la mayoría de los partidos de la oposición en Grecia. Finalmente, las autoridades judiciales dieron permiso para la exhumación a principios de octubre.

En su intervención en el Parlamento, D. Koutsoumpas, Secretario General del Comité Central del KKE, denunció que el verdadero objetivo del Gobierno no es la supuesta preservación del carácter del monumento al Soldado Desconocido. «Su problema es la protesta y la movilización popular, como se ha manifestado recientemente con motivo de la huelga de hambre de Panos Routsis y el apoyo a su justa reivindicación», y añadió: «Ni las leyes, ni las enmiendas, ni las vallas pueden detener el ímpetu del pueblo que ha decidido conquistar sus derechos».
