The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

Defend India's Sovereignty: Reject US Sanctions Law

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the new US Sanctions Act, which arms the US President with sweeping powers to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. By weaponising trade, the US seeks to arrogate to itself the right to decide who purchases oil from whom. This legislation, dictating the foreign and economic policies of other countries is a blatant violation of their sovereignty and dignity and cannot be tolerated.

India, which is heavily dependent on imported crude, is among the countries that could be targeted because of its substantial imports from Russian.

Russia alone accounted for more than 51 per cent of India's imports in July 2026. Any forced disruption or costly restructuring of oil supplies can lead to escalating fuel prices resulting in a cascading impact on its economy including inflation, price rise and the livelihood of ordinary people.

Imports from Iran have already been interrupted.

The Modi government must stop treating the United States as a strategic partner and succumbing to the intimidating tactics of US imperialism. Union Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, during his proposed US visit to attend the G-20 trade ministerial should forcefully put across India's case and demand the repeal of this law. We cannot allow our economic and foreign-policy choices to be dictated by the US.
