We condemn the repression against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the workers movement in India

International Commission of the NCPN

On 27 May 2026, Delhi Police detained M.A. Baby, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), together with other CPI(M) leaders and activists, during a protest in New Delhi against Enforcement Directorate raids targeting Pinarayi Vijayan, a senior CPI(M) leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala, and his family.

According to reports, those detained were later released. However, their release does not lessen the seriousness of the attack. The very act of detaining communist leaders, workers and demonstrators for protesting against politically motivated raids is itself an act of intimidation and repression. Temporary detention remains a weapon of the bourgeois state: it disrupts organisation, threatens militants, and sends a warning to the wider workers’ movement.

This is part of a worrying trend of the bourgeois state repeatedly using intimidation and repression against those forces that organise workers, peasants and oppressed sections against the rule of capital. This incident comes in the context of a broader repressive campaign against India’s communist forces by the right-wing and reactionary government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The repression of communist leaders and demonstrators exposes the authoritarian tendency of a regime that combines reactionary politics, anti-communism, and the defence of monopoly interests.

We condemn the detention and violence against all detained comrades and protesters. We demand an end to the repression against the CPI(M) and the communist and workers’ movement in India.

Solidarity with the Indian communists!

Hands off the CPI(M)!

Repression will not break the struggle of the working class in India and worldwide!
