A great victory of the workers in Portugal!

The workers’ struggle has defeated the Labour Package in the workplaces, in the streets and in Parliament!

The workers in Portugal have achieved, through their struggle, a great victory in defending their labour and trade union rights, by defeating the Labour Package [of legislation] put forth by the PSD/CDS Government and which was supported by the bosses’ confederations.

This is a great victory, which shows the decisive strength of the workers’ organization, struggle and unity.

It is an important and significant victory that crowns a process of struggle – that was waged since the Summer of last year - for the workers’ demands and rights and against the Labour Package. Part and parcel of these struggles were the major demonstrations of September 20 and November 8, the great General Strike of December 11, the major demonstrations of January 13, February 28 and April 17, the people’s commemorations of April 25, the May 1st Day of struggle, the great General Strike of June 3, as well as the rally in front of the Portuguese Parliament on June 18 and the presence during the vote on the Labour Package, on June 19, of hundreds of trade union representatives of the workers in the galleries of Parliament.

The struggle against the Labour Package accompanied the workers’ struggles for demands such as higher wages and better living standards, the strikes and struggles in companies and workplaces, as well as sectoral struggles and the struggle of the youth – including on March 28, Working Youth Day – and of women – namely on March 8, International Women’s Day.

The workers’ struggle was decisive for the outcome of the parliamentary vote that rejected the Labour Package of the Government and the bosses, which only received favourable votes from PSD/CDS and IL [parties]. The Chega [party], which until the final moment tried everything to ensure that the Labour Package could get through, was forced to vote against, countering its own will.

This was a struggle that had to confront intimidation, blackmail, lies, manipulation, demagoguery, and a powerful political and ideological propaganda which sought to promote the supposed benefits of the Labour Package and the inevitability of its implementation. But the workers overcame all this, not letting themselves be intimidated or coerced, and never giving up the struggle for their rights.

A decisive role in this victory was played by the action of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers – Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN), the United Trade Union Movement and other trade union structures, which during 11 months, in a persistent and incessant way, informed the workers about what the Labour Package meant, in terms of intensifying exploitation and the attack against their rights and living standards, and mobilized and organized the workers’ struggle.

This struggle was marked by the PCP’s own committed activity and action. From the very first moment, and in a confident way, [PCP] indicated the goal of defeating the Labour Package of the PSD/CDS Government and of big capital, directly contacted many thousands of workers, exposing and informing about the harmful contents of the Labour Package and isolating the Government and all those who were preparing to let this attack against the labour and trade union rights pass in Parliament.

The onslaught against workers’ rights, seeking to degrade their living standards and to jeopardize the future of the workers, of women, of the youth, of children is not just a reality in Portugal. It is also pursued by the European Union and by the generality of Governments in its member countries, as well as by Governments in other countries of the world.

The strength of the workers and of the people, which defeated the Labour Package, is the strength that can defeat the onslaught by the PSD/CDS Government – which is often made possible, whether by IL and Chega, whether by the PS – that imposes low wages and pensions, against the right to healthcare, to education, to social security, to housing and which privatizes strategic companies, among many other harmful aspects. [It is the strength] that can open the road towards a patriotic and left-wing alternative that defends the rights of the workers, of the people and of the Country, and not the interests of big capital and the subordination to the neoliberal, militaristic and federalist policies of the European Union, of the USA, of NATO and of imperialism in general.

The struggle is worthwhile!

Grande vitória dos trabalhadores em Portugal!

A luta dos trabalhadores derrotou o Pacote Laboral nos locais de trabalho, nas ruas e no parlamento!

Os trabalhadores em Portugal alcançaram pela sua luta uma grande vitória em defesa dos seus direitos laborais e sindicais, derrotando o Pacote Laboral apresentado pelo Governo PSD/CDS e apoiado pelas confederações patronais.

Uma grande vitória que mostra a força maior da organização, da luta e da unidade dos trabalhadores.

Uma importante e significativa vitória que culmina um processo de lutas – desenvolvido a partir do Verão do ano passado – pelas reivindicações e direitos dos trabalhadores e contra o Pacote Laboral. Lutas em que se integram as grandes manifestações de 20 de Setembro e de 8 de Novembro, a grande Greve Geral de 11 de Dezembro, as grandes manifestações de 13 de Janeiro, 28 de Fevereiro e 17 de Abril, as comemorações populares do 25 de Abril, a jornada de luta do 1º de Maio, a grande Greve Geral de 3 de Junho, bem como a acção de 18 de Junho frente ao parlamento português e a presença no momento da votação do Pacote Laboral no parlamento, a 19 de Junho, de centenas de representantes sindicais dos trabalhadores nas suas galerias.

A luta contra o Pacote Laboral soma-se à acção reivindicativa dos trabalhadores por melhores salários e condições de vida, às greves e acções de luta em empresas e locais de trabalho, bem como às lutas sectoriais e às lutas da juventude – incluindo o dia 28 de Março, Dia da Juventude Trabalhadora –, e das mulheres – nomeadamente no 8 de Março, Dia Internacional da Mulher.

A luta dos trabalhadores foi determinante para a votação no parlamento que pôs fim ao Pacote Laboral do Governo e do patronato, que contou apenas com o apoio de PSD/CDS e IL. O Chega, que tentou tudo até à última hora para viabilizar o Pacote Laboral, foi obrigado a votar contra, ao contrário do que queria.

Uma luta que teve de enfrentar a pressão, a chantagem, a mentira, a manipulação, a demagogia, uma poderosa propaganda política e ideológica de promoção dos supostos benefícios do Pacote Laboral e da inevitabilidade da sua aplicação, mas que, face às quais, os trabalhadores não se deixaram intimidar e condicionar, nunca desistindo de defender os seus direitos.

Uma vitória em que teve um papel determinante a acção desenvolvida pela Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses – Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN), o Movimento Sindical Unitário e outras estruturas sindicais que, de forma persistente e incessante, ao longo de 11 meses, esclareceram os trabalhadores sobre o que o Pacote Laboral representava de incremento da exploração e de ataque aos seus direitos e condições de vida e mobilizaram e organizaram a luta dos trabalhadores.

Uma luta que contou com a empenhada intervenção e acção própria do PCP que, desde o primeiro momento e de forma confiante, apontou o objectivo da derrota do Pacote Laboral do Governo PSD/CDS e do grande capital, contactando directamente com milhares e milhares de trabalhadores, denunciando e dando a conhecer as gravosas medidas do Pacote Laboral e isolando o Governo e os que se preparavam para viabilizar no parlamento este ataque contra os direitos laborais e sindicais.

A investida contra os direitos, que degrada as condições de vida e quer colocar em causa o futuro dos trabalhadores, das mulheres, dos jovens, das crianças, não se verifica apenas em Portugal, é também prosseguida pela União Europeia e pela generalidade dos governos dos países que a integram, assim como por governos de outros países no mundo.

A força dos trabalhadores e do povo que derrotou o Pacote Laboral é a força que pode derrotar a investida do Governo PSD/CDS – que é muitas vezes viabilizada, quer pela IL ou o Chega, quer pelo PS –, de imposição de baixos salários e pensões, de ataque ao direito à saúde, à educação, à segurança social, à habitação, de privatização de empresas estratégicas, entre muitos outros gravosos aspectos, e abrir caminho a uma alternativa patriótica e de esquerda, que defenda os interesses dos trabalhadores, do povo e do País e não os interesses do grande capital e a subordinação às políticas neoliberais, militaristas e federalistas da União Europeia, aos EUA, à NATO e ao imperialismo em geral.
