In solidarity with the people of Iran

On behalf of the Politburo of the Sudanese Communist Party, we hereby express our complete and unwavering solidarity with the people of Iran and their progressive representative political currents, not least the fraternal Tudeh Party of Iran, in the wake of an indisputably bloody mass crackdown waged by the Islamic Republic regime in response to the popular protests that began on 28 December over the country's economic freefall and acutely deteriorating living conditions.

We express our grave concern regarding the sharp increase in the number of those reliably reported to have been killed over the course of just a few days under the cover of a near-total internet and communications blackout imposed by the regime.  This concern extends to the fates of the several thousand further people detained by the authorities of the Islamic Republic in connection with these protests - including hundreds reported to have already been sentenced to death without any semblance of legal due process.

The theocratic dictatorship's default recourse to unrestrained violence and brutal repression in the face of organic, legitimate, and peaceful protests by the long-suffering Iranian people at their worsening plight, both economic and social, once more underscores that it is completely devoid of any answer or solution to the manifold crises it has itself brought about through decades of wanton misrule, corruption, and repression.

Of course, we in the Sudanese Communist Party, owing to our own painful experiences, are only too aware of the calamity, tyranny, and misery epitomised by the prolonged rule of 'Political Islam' and religious fundamentalism - such as that endured by the Sudanese people for 30 long years following the 1989 coup d'état that saw the Omar al-Bashir regime seize power.  Indeed, the Islamic Republic of Iran was one of the principal backers of that regime and remains so of its successor, the Sudanese Armed Forces military junta, in the current brutal war that has brought about disaster for our homeland and people.

We furthermore reject outright the attempts being made to misappropriate and sabotage the popular protest movement by certain right-wing currents among the Iranian diaspora, as well as the continued threat of imperialist military intervention that hangs over Iran.  We stress that the future course of developments in Iran is the sole preserve of its people and must remain so.

Victory to the Iranian people in the popular struggle against the reactionary theocratic dictatorship in Iran!

Long live fraternal and international solidarity!
