The agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian political prisoners has revived hopes for peace. AKEL expresses the hope that this will lead to a definitive end to Israel's genocidal war waged against the Palestinian people and pave the way for a just and lasting peace in the region.
A decisive factor in these developments was and remains the heroic resilience of the Palestinian people, who refused to abandon their land, which, combined with the global movement of solidarity with Palestine, has intensified international pressure on the Israeli regime and forced states and governments to reconsider their position. Right now, the critical issues are the implementation of the agreements by the Netanyahu regime, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza, the return of uprooted Palestinians to their homes, and an end to the attacks waged by the Israeli army and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. At the same time, the Israeli regime must be held accountable before international criminal justice for the genocide and crimes against humanity it has committed over the past two years.
AKEL will continue to join its voice with the millions of people around the world who stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people until their vindication and freedom, until the Palestinian people have attained a free, independent, territorially contiguous and viable state, on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
