End US Imperialism Against the People of Venezuela
The CPUSA condemns in the strongest possible terms Trump’s aggressive, unnecessary, and unprovoked military escalation against the people of Venezuela. In addition to deploying warships, the United States has already carried out at least four deadly attacks on alleged drug boats without providing any evidence and without regard for international human rights and maritime laws.
Since returning to office, Donald Trump has made it clear that he seeks to provoke conflict across the Western Hemisphere. While his initial bluster targeted Greenland, Canada, and Panama, now Venezuela is squarely in his crosshairs. By designating alleged Venezuelan drug cartels as “terrorist organizations,” Washington has laid the groundwork for war against the already heavily sanctioned nation. Since the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, the United States has considered Latin America and the Caribbean its backyard. Its policies of aggression have included invasions, military interventions, anti-democratic pro-U.S. dictatorships, covert and overt plans of massacre, and economic blockades on a series of nations including the decades long blockade against Cuba.
Trump’s reckless actions threaten catastrophic consequences for the working class across the region, as rising geopolitical tensions push nations to the brink. Most immediately, they endanger Venezuela’s fishing communities, whose livelihoods depend on sailing those waters.
We demand an immediate end to US Imperialism in the Americas and a lifting of all sanctions against the people of Latin America!
