Balochistan in Crisis: End the Injustice and Enforced Disappearances
Hyderabad (Press Release):
The worsening situation in Balochistan is the responsibility of the Pakistani state, its institutions, and the tribal chiefs. Despite having rich natural resources, a long coastline, and fertile land, most people in Balochistan are forced to live in poverty and hardship. They reside in mud houses and are compelled to drink unsafe, contaminated water. In sharp contrast, Baloch tribal chiefs and state officials posted in the province enjoy lavish lives, living in large mansions in Lahore, Islamabad, Dubai, and various European cities. This deep class divide naturally fuels anger and resentment among the people of Balochistan. Moreover, when people are denied the right to freely choose their own representatives, what option remains for them?
These views were expressed by Comrade Imdad Qazi, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Pakistan, while addressing a party meeting at the party office in Naseem Nagar. Comrade Qazi stated that the security establishment has neither allowed democracy to develop nor permitted democratic parties and institutions to grow across Pakistan. However, he emphasized that the situation in Balochistan is far more serious. Agents of powerful state institutions, working together with a small number of Baloch tribal chiefs, are plundering all the wealth while denying the people even the right to peaceful protest. Anyone who raises the voice against these injustices is subjected to enforced disappearance.
He further said that even the peaceful movement of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), whose only demand is an end to enforced disappearances, is not being allowed to operate. He demanded the restoration of the political process across the country, including Balochistan; that state agencies be restricted to the barracks and issues be resolved through political means and that all political prisoners, including Mahrang Baloch, Ali Wazir, Yasmin Rashid, Idris Khattak, and others, be released soon.
